THE STEERING SYSTEM
The steering system is actually a rather complex system as it is one of the nerve centers of the car.
In general, it includes all the mechanical and / or electronic components that make it possible to give direction to the car.
In this case, the driver of the vehicle will apply the force on the steering wheel, that is the "visible" part, which will be transferred from the steering column, via a cardan joint, to the steering box whose rotating motion will be converted into a rectilinear motion - left and right - and will, in return, be transferred to the steering rods.
These will act on the wheels which will eventually change direction
The evolution of the car leds us to discover the power assistance, first through the hydraulic steering, consisting of a pump usually driven by the engine service belt, which through pipes pushed the oil inside a cylinder, which then supplied steering assistance and thanks to the connection with the steering levers it allowed the rotation of the wheels, reducing the force required to steer, up to the electric power assistance.
The hydraulic system has now been replaced by the electrical system, which integrates itself better with the electronic management of the car and above all absorbs less power, reducing consumption and emissions, contributing to comply with the increasingly stringent anti-pollution regulations.
The steering system consists of 3 main components:
A - the steering column
B - the gimbal
C - the steering rack
Up to twenty years ago, everything was mechanical, and the not so young remember well the effort that had to be done during stationary maneuvers, even just to park.
Over the years the manufacturers have made a great evolutionary effort to make these maneuvers less difficult, thus increasing safety and driving comfort, first with the hydraulic power assistance, a system consisting of a hydraulic pump, usually driven by the engine service belt, which pushed the oil into a cylinder that provided steering assistance and, thanks to the connection with the steering levers, allowed the rotation of the wheels, reducing the force required to steer.
But the automotive world took giant steps in just a few years, also thanks to the stringent anti-pollution regulations
In fact, today the most popular steering system is the electric steering.
And this did not happen by chance, the comfort and environmental advantages of the electric steering compared to the previous ones are numerous both in terms of consumption and safety and comfort.
As a matter of fact, the electric steering integrates with modern ADAS systems (Advanced Driving Aid System), playing a fundamental role in safety.
When the advanced features of the ADAS systems come into play, the driver assistance can take over from the driver in critical situations, such as maintaining the lane or avoiding an obstacle that the car might collide with.
In this case the ESP sensors have the task of monitoring the stability of the vehicle.
For example, in the event of abnormal transverse acceleration, they inform the steering control unit of the car's condition.
In turn, the steering control unit evaluates the situation by means of the torque sensor and the data received and starts an antagonistic measure by means of a command to the electric steering motor to bring the car back on track.
This is one of the functions that electric steering can perform, but with the introduction of radar and cameras on board the cars, the steering has further increased its range.
For example, the Lane keeping AID function (Ford Lane keeping AID or Mercedes Keep Lane Assist etc) is based on the cooperation between the camera mounted on the windshield and the electric steering.
While driving, the camera monitors the demarcation lines, which must be clearly visible, and calculates and measures their size using software. Should the driver go outside this “range”, the system would initially emit a signal in the form of vibration on the steering wheel or an acoustic alarm.
If the driver does not react, the steering initiates a controlled steering to put the car back on track.
Thanks to the electric steering it is also possible to park the car while being outside the car itself but this is a further step that will bring us closer and closer to the cars driving by themselves.
TYPES
1 – Steering column (EPS)
In this case we refer to the EPS (Electric Power Steering) and it is the evolution of hydraulic power steering.
The column incorporates the electric motor, delegated to supply the power to the system and the control unit can be integrated or separated
When the first electric steering appeared, about twenty years ago, it was like all the news, looked at with a certain diffidence.
Many will remember the 'CITY' button on the dashboard of a very popular small car which, when pressed, increased the steering assistance during maneuvering or, more generally, in city traffic.
That component, developed by Delphi, proved its validity both in terms of functionality and reliability and since then the diffusion of electric steering has increased exponentially, to become almost global today.
Even the Volkswagen group on its cars adopted a similar system naming it Servotronic.
The system consists of an electric motor controlled by a control unit and a reducer.
The control unit reads the steering signal, provided by the torque sensor
and combines it with the speed data of the car, so as to activate the electric motor that provides the torque necessary to make the steering with the right comfort and effort for the driver.
The torque sensor is mounted between the steering shaft and the pinion and calculates the torque / force applied by the driver on the steering wheel during rotation, by entering signals, consisting of electrical variations, into the CAN line.
These signals arrive at the steering control unit which processes them, together with other signals coming from the sensors scattered throughout the car and then sends a command to the electric motor which will assist the driver in steering operations.
The perception of the steering that we have when driving our car at high speeds or during parking maneuvers is obviously not the same, this is because the steering assistance varies the power supplied according to the speed of the vehicle.
How?
When we drive on a motorway at high speed, not requiring steering torque, the electric motor supports the steering less than when we are parking.
The steering control unit reads the values put into the CAN network - the data line present in the car - from the ESP control unit and from the engine control unit.
This data is used to know the vehicle speed by means of the wheel revolution sensors and the angle of rotation of the steering wheel obtained from the steering angle or torque sensor.
The engine control unit, on the other hand, detects the “engine active” signal by means of the number of revolutions indicated by the engine revolutions sensor and controls the power assistance.
Thanks to the EPS, greater energy savings are obtained compared to the hydraulic one, both for the higher efficiency of the electric motor and for the possibility of being deactivated in the absence of steering action.
All this contributes to reducing consumption and reducing harmful emissions into the atmosphere
Among the most common items offered by Di.Pa. we can point out the following ones:
With embedded ECU
- Fiat Panda / Grande Punto / Punto (188) / Stilo / Bravo / 500 / 500L
- Alfa Romeo Mito
- Renault Clio III /Modus
- Opel Corsa D
- Kia Rio
- Opel Meriva
- Suzuki Ignis
With separate ECU
- Opel Corsa C
- Toyota Auris
- Peugeot 107/Citroen C1 /Toyota Aygo
2 – Mechanical steering column or column and electric steering rack
In this case we are talking about EPAS (Electric Power Assist Steering) and it is a variant of the EPS system, used manly on premium cars.
In this case, the column is totally mechanical and is connected to the electric rack via the cardan joint.
Unlike the hydraulic steering boxes, inside EPAS system there is a rack and pinion controlled by an electric motor which is operated by a control unit positioned in the steering box itself.
The control unit gets the data from the car's control units, and integrates them with the vehicle's safety systems and allows the system to integrate with the vehicle's safety devices (ASR, ESP ...)
Among the most common EPAS, offered by Di.Pa.Sport , you can find the following applications:
- VW Golf V/ Golf VI/ Golf VII / Passat/Tiguan
- Smart ForTwo /ForFour
- Citroen C2/C3
- Peugeot 207/ 308/ 1007
- Mini
- BMW Serie 1/2/3
- Alfa Romeo Giulietta
- Ford C-Max /Mondeo /Kuga/ Focus
3 –With mechanical steering column or column and hydraulic steering rack
The hydraulic power steering was originally designed to be used on heavy vehicles, such as tractors or trucks,
and was later developed to be applied also on cars.
This system is still widespread today, even though the electric system, which we have already seen, is quickly supplanting it.
Also in this case we have a steering column, connected by a cardan joint to the rack, or hydraulic steering box,
whose action is supported by the power supplied by a hydraulic pump, which can be mechanical (driven by the service belt) or electric, and by a tank for the hydraulic fluid
Mechanical steering pump
The mechanical pump (Power steering pump) is driven by the service belt and carries out the function of pushing the oil, contained in a separate tank, into the power steering pipes, in order to make the steering action easier and with less effort.
Being connected directly to the engine, it has the defect of absorbing a lot of power, which translates into higher fuel consumption
Electric steering pump
EPHS (Electrically Powered Hydraulic Steering) pumps are the natural evolution of traditional power steering pumps.
Normally equipped with an integrated oil tank, it does not generate pressure through the motion of the engine, but thanks to an electric motor integrated into the pump itself.
Through the speed data detected, the pump delivers the right pressure to make steering easier and steering stable.
In the absence of steering action, it is deactivated allowing to absorb less power and therefore reducing fuel consumption
Hydraulic steering rack
It is still improperly referred to by many as the "steering box".
The steering boxes originally looked like this
Totally devoid of hydraulic help, they contained a rack that operated the steering arms directly and required a lot of force.
from the driver to be operated, especially when stationary
Now, the hydraulic steering box looks like this instead
The hydraulic steering rack is an hydraulic power steering that "softens" the steering movement requiring less effort from the driver.
In order to properly work, the power steering unit requires a mechanical or electric pump (see above) which pushes the oil through the power steering circuit, which
in turn it channels it towards a piston which acts as a lever on the steering wheel.
Thanks to the globoidal screw (worm screw), connected to the steering column, the distributor is controlled by directing the steering in one or the other direction, making the steering is easier and requiring less effort from the driver.
TYPICAL FAILURES
The classic symptoms indicating a steering system problem are:
Hard steering:
- classic symptom, namely the loss of fluidity in the steering action and consequent lighting of the steering wheel-shaped warning light on the instrument panel
The reasons can be multiple:
- Electric motor failure resulting from:
- Internal relay burned down
- Internal desoldering of a printed circuit
- Steering control unit short-circuited
- Power steering pump failure
- Short-circuit
- Seizure (In this case the pump also becomes noisy, causing the service belt to slip)
- Steering box failure: Delayed replacement of hydraulic fluid can cause damage to the steering box circuit, blocking the internal valves and causing the seizure
Car that, after a bend, delays alignment
- the traction control light also normally flashes on and it is a clear symptom of a torque sensor failure
Noisy steering
the noise can be caused either by a loosen service belt or by thethe steering rods to be adjusted or in the most serious cases, from the internal gears of the steering box (in this case the problem is more serious)
All these cases are well known by Di.Pa.Sport, which over the years has analyzed the electronic problems affecting the steering system and has developed the most suitable and effective solutions for the repair of:
- EPS (remanufactured, endowed with brand new steering sensor)
- electric power steering pumps
- electric and hydraulic steering racks
Each item is remanufactured with original quality spare parts and individually tested before being placed on the market, on test benches suitably developed by Di.Pa.Sport. The products are also covered with warranty period of 1 year.
In recent years, the reconditioned versions have also been joined by new, original and aftermarket versions, in order to be able to offer the customer the best option for their needs

reproducing the behavior in the car.
The Di.Pa.SPort overhaul process involves a total overhaul of the steering column, using original quality spare parts if always replacing the steering sensor with a new one.
Even some external galvanized parts are replaced, even if they are not structural parts, to give the part a product image like new.
Each part is then individually tested before being approved as available for sale.
Like the new part, the overhauled product is covered by a 12 month warranty.
Often, the most economic alternative that is looking for the part at a car wreckage.
Doint like this, however, can bring to various unforeseen problems:
- the internal and electronic components are not new, much of their useful life has already been spent. The problem can therefore happen again in a short time, even in a dangerous way
- no guarantee
better to rely on experts, recognized nationally and internationally
